Very few operations are fought in conditions with heavy snow and ice, so the majority of work done by commandos is search and rescue operations and patrols.

In the Commonwealth state of Canada, commandos are regularly used to patrol and resuce trapped walkers and climbers, especially in and around the Rockies.
