Operations

Indonesia

Four years ago, The Treaty of San Maninco was established, and the 5th Brigade Commandos have been involved heavily in keeping that treaty. There are currently no men permanently stationed there, but 40 Royal Marines are due to arrive for general peacekeeping puropses on 21st July.

Commandos train for Jungle warfare in and around Malaysia, practicing ambushes and assaults. It is important for all Commandos to be able to survive in the hostile conditions offered by a jungle.

Preparing for an ambush

Singapore

Another important role provided by the Commandos is the protection of Singapore, after the uprisings in 2001. Members of the 5th Commando Brigade are currently on patrol there and in neighbouring Malaysia.

Operation Desert Whisp, the code name for the invasion of the Puerto Strait Islands, south of Singapore, was one of the most recent, major operations completed in a jungle environment. Six hundred commandos were involved in the coalition invasion, which included troops from France, Germany and the USA.

Training in Malaysia

Training

All commandos must complete a six week teaching course in Malaysia if they are to qualify to assist in Jungle operations. Troops are transported there during the winter season on HMS Invincible, the RN's aircraft carrier. All members of the 5th Commando Brigade have completed this training.
