How to Take Bad Photos

Have you ever wondered just what is inside the head of a minfig? Well, Legoweb is about to reveal all with the help of some major surgery, and a friend called Billy.

Billy has kindly agreed to let me, and you, into one of a Lego man's best kept secrets, his head. Here's a picture of Billy's head on the right. His head can be split up into four areas: eyes, mouth, brains, construction. Let's have a look at each one in turn.

The four areas

But first, lets get inside the head. As you can see, it's pretty cramped, but there's room for all of the necessary people to fit inside. It's got a nice, solid floor separating the two levels, and a ladder to move between them, but apart from that, it's a pretty simple layout.

So lets crack on, and have a look at the eyes to begin with.

Inside the whole head

The eyes of a Lego man are controlled by Cyber, a firm but friendly spaceman who is related to the leader of the Spyrius space people. What the Lego man sees is projected onto the big screen above his head, and the controls and dials in front of him (hard to see here), display important information about the status of the eyes (e.g. are there any eyebrows?, are the eyes dots, circles or lines?).

Cyber is the most sensible member of the head, and enjoys fishing and darts in his spare time.

Now lets have a look at the mouth.

This is run by Flex, who is more often seen in his role as a member of the Alpha Team. His big mouth and wild character makes communication with other minifgures easy, and he can speak into his walkie-talkie, microphone, or mouthpiece.

Flex is the most boisterous member of the head, and he enjoys clubbing with his mates and extreme sports.

Now lets go straight to the heart of a Lego man's mind, his brain.

With such a complex job to undertake, the natural candidate is Professor (Dr.) Kilroy, and good friend to Johnny Thunder and the Adventurers. Using precise mathematical instruments (set squares, magnifying glasses etc.), they keep everyone in order and the mind ticking. Because a minifgure doesn't actually do much thinking for itself, the Professor's are generally involved with administration and things like that.

And finally, we'll take a peek at somewhere you don't often see, the construction zone.

You probably take it for granted that whenever you change a Lego man's hair or body, it just sticks to him like magic. But behind the scenes, a team of busy builders are working away day and night to ensure that all body parts stay put.

This job falls to Bandit, a tough talking no nonsense member of the Rock Raiders, who has experience with lava flows, ice crevasses and rock monsters. With a whole array of tools at their disposal, Bandit is possibly the most important members of the entire team!

Have you ever wondered why many Lego men have small holes in the tops of their heads (see insert). Well, this is because of the ladder used by the minifigures inside the head to move around and get outside. It also provides a much needed supply of fresh air for the inside of the head (the poor chaps would suffocate without it!).
